Am I Already Behind in the AI Era?

Now more than ever, in just about every role, people are expected to use AI tools to get more done in less time.

That expectation isn’t about working harder—it’s about working differently. AI has introduced new possibilities for how we prepare, decide, execute, and follow through. But realizing those benefits consistently requires more than access to tools. It requires a new mindset and a practical skill set that helps AI support the way you actually work.

The 20 Minute AI Habit was created to help you build that skill set—quickly, intentionally, and one habit at a time.

As your host, and the CEO of Change3, I’ll walk you through some of the simple habits I picked up to go from being a “zero AI” leader of a small, growing business to achieving big gains in productivity across my company. The earliest wins came from improving how we use time—especially around meetings and planning. This series is here to help you do the same—quickly, practically, and with results that will make your day.

How to Become More Strategic Using AI

AI is common. The opportunity now is learning how to use it more intentionally, more strategically—so you get more from every minute, more consistently, inside the tools you’re allowed to use.

Here are the three realities this series is designed to support:

  1. AI use is widespread, but adoption at scale is uneven in larger organizations. Microsoft and LinkedIn report that 75% of knowledge workers use AI at work, and 46% of those users started within the last six months, which tells us adoption is both real and recent. At the same time, many organizations are still working through enablement, governance, and repeatable workflows that turn individual AI usage into consistent results. This is also where the “BYOAI” reality shows up—people using personal or unapproved tools because sanctioned options and training haven’t caught up—creating security and governance concerns.
  2. In small and mid-sized businesses, leaders have a meaningful opportunity to adopt AI intentionally and “catch up” quickly. Adoption and readiness are mixed. For example, Gusto reports that 43% of small businesses have never considered using GenAI, while others have experimented or are already benefiting—showing a clear confidence and knowledge gap. In the middle market, RSM reports adoption is rising, but implementation is not frictionless—92% of firms using GenAI encountered challenges during rollout, including skill gaps and privacy/security concerns.
  3. Across all companies, most AI users are still operating tactically, and there are opportunities to go further. Many people use AI for isolated tasks—drafting, summarizing, brainstorming. Fewer are using it across the workflows that shape the day: meetings, planning, decisions, execution, and follow-through. At the enterprise level, Gartner also reports that the top barrier to AI adoption is difficulty estimating and demonstrating value, which is often a sign that teams need clearer, more repeatable habits—not more tools.

The 20 Minute AI Habit is designed to help you move beyond tactical, task-by-task AI usage and into more intentional, intelligent ways of working—so you naturally begin thinking more strategically, operating more efficiently, and getting more done in less time.

Throughout the series, we’ll show examples using Microsoft 365 Copilot, because it’s what we’ve used to make meaningful gains securely across our growing business at Change3. And the habits themselves are tool agnostic—so you can apply them with any AI you’re using now or later.
